CANCER MYTHS AND FACTS

  1. Cancer is inherited
    Cancer is not genetic in true sense. For certain cancers the genes can be passed on to child which in turn raises the likelihood of developing cancer that increases the risk only.
  2. Cancer is almost always fatal
    Cancer can cause death. But in most of the cases it is true patient reports to doctor at very late which leads to late treatment and could be fatal? If the cancer is detected early it could be curable depending upon the type, grade stage of the cancer.
  3. Breast cancer is female cancer
    Breast cancer is mostly found in females, but males also gets affected and could be fatal if treated late.
  4. Antiperspirants and deodorant can cause cancer
    There is no conclusive and credible evidence that has linked the use of antiperspirants and deodorants to cancer especially to breast cancer
  5. Hair dye causes brain cancer.
    It has been thought that hair dye caused several different types of cancers According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association; hair dye does not increase the risk of developing cancer.
  6. Cell phones cause cancer
    There is no credible study available that consistently proves that using a cell phone has the ability to cause cancer.
  7. Cancer can be contagious
    Cancer is not contagious at all. The viruses HPV which causes Cervical cancer and Hepatitis C liver cancer could be transmitted through various routes like sharing needles, transfusions, unprotected sex, could be a reason for cancers like liver or cervix.
  8. Positive thinking will cure cancer
    Positive attitude can do is improve the quality of your life during cancer treatment. By positive attitude one could be more likely to stay active, continue to be more social with family, friends, and community. In turn, this may enhance your feeling of well-being and help you find the strength to deal with your cancer.
  9. Commercial Artificial Sweeteners and Cancer
    Artificial sweeteners used by mostly diabetic patients can cause cancer which is untrue. As there is no credible research which could be linked these sweeteners sufficiently to cancer.
  10. Dark-skinned people don't get skin cancer
    Dark skinned populations from Asia, Africa can do get skin cancer so, skin color is no excuse for skipping sun-safety.
  11. Cancer causes hair loss
    Cancer does not cause hair loss. Hair loss is a side effect of cancer treatments, like chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Not every drug used in chemotherapy can lead to hair loss and not every patient loss their hair during radiation therapy or chemotherapy.
